Xander invites Anya, Buffy and Riley around to watch Kung Fu videos. While Buffy expresses her disgust at some of the stunts perfromed Xander's drunken parents fight and throw things about upstairs. Xander is very embarrased but the others try to pretend that they can't hear anything.

The next day, the Scoobies have a field trip, out house-huntign for Xander (who has decided that enough is enough and that it's time for a new place.) They look at one of the prospective apartments. It's is absolutely gorgeous, all big windows and Southern Style fans. Buffy and Riley check out the bedrooms. Xander thinks the place is lovely but he doesn't think he can afford it and this upsets Anya a lot, she who wants nice things and nice places, not smelly cat-reed-on basements.

Giles is doing some work down at the magic shop where he receives a visit from a demon searching for the Slayer. A few dusty old books later he identifies the demon as Toth, only survivor of the Tothric Clan. These demons like smelly places, which means another Scooby Gang field trip, this time to the dump.

The gang checks out the city dump ("The Place where the smells go on holiday in search of the demon and find Spike collecting stuff for his bachelor crypt.. The demon comes out from behind a large pile of rubbish and blasts a blot out of his rod at Buffy. Xander spots him and dives in front of Buffy taking the full force of the blast which knocks him to the ground. He gets to his feet and walks off with the rest of the gang, In a little bit of pain, but being all brave and manly about it.

What they don't see is another Xander still lying in the pile of rubbish.

The next morning, one Xander awakens at the city dump. It takes him a couple of moments to realise where he is and is slightly miffed that the others left him behind. A very smelly Xander returns to his house, only to fid the door locked and his doppelganger (Sauve Xander) coming out of the shower. Xander is not happy at all.

Spike has been busy since his return from the dump and has put together a Buffy doll from mannequin parts which he uses to practice beating up on. Something he takes great pleasure out of.

Sauve Xander is a busy boy, he heads off to xander's job at the construction site and gets called in to see his manager. Xander, spying on his double thinks he's going to get sacked, but is shocked when he gets a promotion instead. Next he goes to the apartment they had looked at the day before and signs the lease. The real estate agent give Sauve Xander her home phone number and comes onto him. Xander, still spying, can't believe it. Finally Sauve Xander sets up a date with Anya for that evening.

Xander finally decides to confront his double which leads to sauve Xander punching him to the ground before walking off. Sauve Xander's next port of call is Giles' where he tells Buffy, Riley and Giles that he has an evil doppelganger. Buffy makes this a matter of Slayer business and promises Xander to sort out his double. xander still spying, is extremely worried by the thought and decided to go see the girl who knows him the best..

Soaked by the rain, Xander goes to Willow and tries to explain that this double is taking over his life. To prove that he really is Xander he even does the Snoopy dance for Willow. will is a bit confused by what is going on. He tells Willow that the double is doing a better job of living his life but then suddenly realizes that his double is going after Anya and that is one thing he won't allow, he leaves Willow none the wiser.

He gets to Anya's place but she has already gone. He notices the answer machine flashing and listens to the messge Sauve Xander left. A quick rummage though Anya's drawers give up a gun and Xander goes to confront his Sauve self and save Anya.

Anya is around at Xander's new place (where a romantic candle-lit dinner has been put on) and she and Sauve Xander discuss their future. Anya has serious fears about not living forever (By her reckoning she's only got about 50 years left!).

Giles (in research mode) discovers that the rod Toth used split Xander into two real Xander's, one with weak qualities and the other with strong qualities. what the demon was trying to do was to spilt Buffy into her Slayer half and Buffy half and kill the weaker half which would kill the stronger half because both are needed to survive.

The weaker Xander crashes the date between Sauve Xander and Anya. Both think that the other is a demon and the weak Xander pulls out a handgun he got from Anya's apartment. Buffy catches them in a stand-off and tries to explain to the doubles the truth about their situation and tries to convince them not to kill each other.

Toth appears at the apartment to finish his job properly and split Buffy but had not counted on the Buffy/Riley tag team which made such short work of the demon.

They reconvene at the Magic Shop. The two Xander are picking up the real Xander's bad habits and Giles laments that Xander is a bad influence on himself. Willow is confident that she can break the spell and join Xander up and does so by speaking just a couple of words to end the spell. xander is very please to be himself again.

Everyone helps Xander move into his new apartment and while they do Xander and Riley talk. Riley confesses that despite how much he loves Buffy, he realizes that she doesn't love him back.
