Season Four
Living Conditions
|
Things aren't going well on Walton's Mountain ... sorry, wrong show. Buffy is finding living with Kathy a little bit difficult. The girl irons her jeans and plays Cher's Believe constantly. Buffy is finding all her annoying little habits grating. kathy isn't much better, wanting to know where Buffy is, who drank some of her milk and even goes as far as following Buffy when she goes on patrol. She catches up with Buffy and offers to walk with her to the coffee bar (Buffy's cover story), unfortunately a demon of some sort is in the area and it attacks Buffy. Buffy pushes Kathy into the bushes so she doesn't see and fights the demon off who runs away into the night. She helps Kathy out of the undergrowth, covering the truth by saying that they were attacked by a woud-be mugger and that she fought him off. Kathy is more upset by the fact her red top is covered in mud (don't fret, just wash it and it'll come out) The next morning, Buffy heads around to Giles's place and finds him not home. She passes the time by collecting his mail and is surprised when he does finally show up. He's been out jogging and he's got a subscription to motorbike and scooter magazine. Giles defends himself by saying he's a 'Mod jogger'. Suddenly realising that Buffy never comes around for just social calls he asks what's up. Buffy tells him that she doesn't want to be around her new roommate. Giles tells her to be more tolerant towards people otherwise she'll end up a lonely old lady who's only friends are cats (Buffy added the last bit). Back at the university, Kathy is passing time of her own by going through Buffy's wardrobe and borrow's one of Buffy's cardigans. She also discovers Buffy's bag of tricks - her Slayage bag, full of stakes, crosses and crossbow bolts. However, she doesn't seem bothered about her roommates weaponry. At lunch, Buffy attempts to escape Kathy by cutting in front of Parker, another student. He tells her how to save money with some handy food stealing tips, because all students are very poor don't you know. After paying for their food, Parker goes to sit with his friends and Buffy joins, Willow, Oz and non-campus guy Xander who doesn't want to populate the non-campus. Xander is stealing food off Willow's plate and explains that his parents will only feed him if her pays, poor lad. Buffy tells them about the strange demon on the campus and Xander asks if they should reform the Scooby Gang. Buffy thinks he's getting a little over excited. Kathy invites herself over to thier table, so all Slaying discussion is abuptly stopped. it is then that Buffy notices that Kathy is wearing her cardy and gets a little narky. Kathy says that she didn't think BUffy would mind. She then bites into this huge burger and drips tomato sauce down the front of it, basically ruining it. Buffy's not impressed. That evening Buffy pours her heart out to Willow over the phone. Willow is also having roommate problems, tonight's problem being the hge party her roommate is throwing in their room. kathy comes back and Buffy hangs up. Kathy tells her to list al the calls she makes down on a pad so that working out the bill will be easier. They argue over more things like Buffy wanting to have the window open, her horrible habit of leaving used gum everywhere, whose food belongs to whom and Kathy sitting on her bed flossing (uugh). Buffy decides to go to sleep and has a nightmare involving the demon form the patrol, a ritual and Buffy havong her soul sucked out of her. She wakes up to find Kathy staring at her who then asks if she always makes that noise when she is sleeping. Later, Buffy gets Giles, Oz and Willow to meet up to tell them about her horrible dream but it digresses into a rant about Kathy. Kathy turns up and says that she's also had a horrible dream (the same as Buffy's) and wants to know what it means. When she goes Buffy complains that Kathy's taking over everything. After she leaves for class, Giles tells the other two to keep an eye on Buffy to make sure she doesn't lose it totally. In the woods in a cave two demons stand around a campfire and talk (in subtitles) about how they have found the girl they are looking for. They perform a ritual that calls another demon, this one's called Taparrich. Buffy goes back to her roomand finds Parker getting chummy with Kathy. He's brought Buffy some heavy duty freezer bags to help her 'nut collecting'. Buffy is a little jealous about Kathy and Parker and after he leaves Buffy has a go at Kathy which turns nasty. Kathy has labelled all her food, including each egg. Buffy gets Kathy's milk and drinks it from the carton, most of it going down her top. Oz is walking Willow back to her room and Willow is fretting about Buffy. She wants to be there for her but she also has a big English paper to do. Oz offers to go and keep an eye on Buffy and try to to get hair braiding. When they get to Willow's room another party is going on inside so Willow heads off to the library, and Oz goes to find Buffy. He joins Buffy on patrol of the campus. They walk past a group of students, the girl in the group staring intently at Oz, something passes between them. Behind them, behind the bushes the commando guys stalk the group of students. Buffy doesn't notice any of this, she is to busy moaning about Kathy. Oz points out that her ranting might not help her catch the demons and in her frustration she kills a bench that is looking shifty. (According to Oz). The next day, Willow and Kathy are talking in the hallway about Buffy. Buffy catches them and gets upset about it. She shows Willow a bag of kathy's toenail clippings which she reckons are still growing. Buffy has come to the conclusion that Kathy is evil and has to be killed. Willow tells her to go and talk things over with Giles (the voice of reason). As soon as Buffy heads off, Willow phones Giles to warn him. When Buffy gets to Giles' house, she finds Oz and Xander waiting for her. They overpower her and tie her up, Xander telling her that it hurts him more than it hurts her, Buffy says that it will, worrying Xander slightly. Giles then goes to do some research to try and find out what's made Buffy all wiggy. Xander and Oz are left to guard her. Xander doesn't think that he's tied the ropes tightly enough and when they go over to check, Buffy breaks her bonds and knocks them out, leaving them lying there while she goes to sort out Kathy. Buffy gets back to her room and finds Kathy there. Kathy hits her and a fight breaks out. While they fight Buffy manages to rip Kathy's face off, revealing kathy's true face, that of a demon, of the same family as the one that attacked them on patrol. The dreams that Buffy was having was a side effect of the ritual Kathy was performing to steal Buffy's soul. She needs a soul to stop the demons chasing her finding her, they'd just take the soulless one away, leaving the souled one behind. Buffy is not impressed. Giles comes back and finds Buffy gone. he quickly explains that the toenails really are growing again and that Buffy was telling the truth all along. Xander and Oz head for Buffy's dorm room to give her a hand while Willow and Giles perform a spell to return Buffy's soul to her body. They are just in time too as Kathy is anout to take Buffy's soul. At that moment Taparrich turns up to get Kathy. He scolds her for running away and Kathy does her sulky child routine. Taparrich opens a vortex (similar to the one in Becoming) in the floor and they go back to whence they came. The next day, Willow moves in to Buffy's room and they are unpacking all Willow's stuff while a tape of the Dingoes plays in the background. Willow puts a Dingoes poster up in the same place that Kathy had her Celine one. Buffy says she's not that terrible to live with and that she was right all along. Willow dutifully agrees. Willow asks if Buffy's going to finish her sandwich and before Buffy can reply takes a bit out of it. The camera zooms in on Buffy's evil stare. |
