Buffy's Diaries - Season 2 - What's My Line, Part 2

Season Two

What's My Line, Part 2

Buffy recovers quite well from the revelation that Kendra is a vampire Slayer, but doesn't beleive her. She persudes Kendra to stop fighting and they go to find Giles.

It turns out that when Buffy died (in Prophecy Girl) even though it was just for a couple of minutes it was long enough for the next Slayer to be called. Kendra was sent by her Watcher to help Giles prevent the ritual of duLac being performed. Buffy and Kendra are forced to work together, but Kendra wants to kill Angel. Buffy finds out about Kendra locking him up in a cage and along with Kendra goes to save him.

Meanwhile, back at Willy's bar, Willy gets Angel out of the cage just in time only to throw him into the sewers where he is picked up by Spike and a couple of hench-vampires. Spike needs Angel to perform the ritual and restore Drusilla. Back at the factory, Spike gives Angel to Drusilla who wants to have some 'fun' (torture) with Angel before he is killed in the ritual.

The two Slayers get to Willy's bar only to find Angel gone. They find Willy and do some gentle interogation. Willy lies to them and as they leave he tells them that he has a friend that does 'art' photography and that the two girls would be perfect.

Buffy tells Willow that now there are two Slayers that she is thinking of quitting and going to Disneyland, but only for a few months because it would get boring.

Giles and Kendra start getting along really well as Kendra is more dedicated to her job and is more knowledgeable about the ancient texts that Giles uses. Buffy is jealous of She-Giles (Kendra), but Willow does point out that Buffy will always be Giles' favourite.

Things are still not going well for Xander and Cordelia. They are still trapped in Buffy's basement and the worm-guy assassin is still waiting for them. They get snappy at each other which deteriorates into a full scale arguement which ends in them kissing passionately. They break apart when they realise what is going on and decide that they *have* to get out of the basement. They cautiously open the door, there is no one there and they creep through the house. They think they are safe until the assassin (in his worm form) pours down on Cordelia. She screams and runs outside where Xander has to hose her down. They make a hasty exit back to the school.

At school, Willow and Oz talk about their similar interests. Buffy is depressed because her tests revealed that she is destined to be a police officer ('but...Donuts!') and goes off to the seminar on it.

There is a female police officer there would is going through a register. She calls Buffy's name and when Buffy identifies herself the officer pulls out a gun and takes a shot at Buffy. Buffy dives for cover pulling another student down and Oz takes a bullet for Willow which he is surprisingly calm about. Kendra comes to Buffy's rescue, but the third assassin has made her mistake.

Everyone meets up in the library, Xander relates their adventure with 'the bug man coo-coo-ca-choo' (omitting the kiss) and Giles reveals that Angel will die if the ritual is completed. Buffy is not happy about this and say that Spike can try killing her or sending assassins after her but no one is messing with her boyfriend. Giles has also found out that the ritual has to be performed in a church, there are 43 of them in Sunnydale (it's that extra evil vibe).

At the factory, Drusilla is happily torturing Angel. She pours Holy Water onto his chest as she tells him about her family (which he killed). Spike comes in to cut the torture short. He wants Angel to be prepared for the ritual. Angel starts winding Spike up about what Dru like and makes Spike very cross. (Angel is trying to get Spike to kill him so that the ritual can't be performed) it almost works, but Spike realises what is going on until Dru tells him to hush.

Buffy and Kendra are sorting out the weaponry for the night's activities and get into a conversation about Slaying and being the Chosen One. kendra thinks that Buffy is too emotional, to which Buffy counters with 'emotions give me power'.

Kendra and Buffy go back to Willy's bar to find out exactly where Spike is holding the ritual. Kendra wants to go back to Giles, but Buffy says that if they do that they might be too late. Buffy takes Willy with her to the deserted church where the ritual is being performed. Unfortunately, Spike is prepared for Buffy and has vampires waiting for her. They drag her into where Spike is perfoming the ritual and watches in horror as Spike finishes the ritual. He tells Buffy not to worry about Angel because he's going to live longer than Buffy is. Buffy gets into a fight as Kendra and the Slayerettes turn up just in time to lend a hand.

Xander gets the attention of the worm assassin and gets him to chase him. Xander runs through a door and pulls it closed. On the other side of the door Cordelia is waiting. They pour buckets of glue onto the floor and when the worm assassin crawls under the door (in his million worm form) he gets stuck in the glue and Cordelia and Xander stomp on him until he's dead.

Back inside the church the Slayerettes are helping the Slayers in the fight, even Willow manages to dust a vampire who explodes all over Giles. Buffy and Kendra work together to kill the vampires and fight Spike.

While this is going on Drusilla is still being restored.

Spike starts a fire and unties Dru from Angel so they can make their escape. He tries to escape with Dru in his arms until Buffy throws a censer at him which smashes into the back of his head pitching him into the church organ which collaspses onto him. With Spike and Dru out of the picture Buffy goes to Angel to see how badly hurt he is and with help from Kendra drags him out of the burning church.

The next day, Kendra is leaving town to return to her Watcher. Buffy sees her off, but not before Kendra tells Buffy not to see Slaying as just a job and that she's not alone in this any longer.

The church is gutted, eveeything is stained with soot or destroyed. There is a movement in the rubble. Drusilla pulls herself out of the rubble and then pulls out an unconscious Spike. She lifts him up as if he weighed nothing and begins to walk out of the church. We can safely say that the ritual has worked to some degree.

Our View -

The end of a great two parter, the introduction of the second Slayer and Buffy showing that she'll do anything for her Angel. The scenes with Xander and Cordelia are fantastic, especially when you see the looks on their faces after their first kiss. Pure class.

Our score - 8

The Professional View

The first attempt at a two part storyline just makes the grade, though the episode sags in the middle and it needs the (Hilarious) Xander/Cordelia subplot to help it acheive a high level of consistency. The fight scenes are good though, with the mother of all burning church climaxes . . .

Their score - 7
