Buffy's Diaries - Season 2 - What's My Line, Part 1

Season Two

What's My Line, Part 2

It is Career's Week at Sunnydale High School, Buffy is depressed because her life is set in stone, there can be only one and all that. At the Factory Spike is working on a cure for his beloved Drusilla. He has found a transcriber (a vmapire called Dalton) to try and translate the book they stole from the library a few weeks before. Dru is watching Spike and Dalton work and is feeling left out. She asks Spike to dance with her and he snaps at her. She cries and makes Spike feel sorry for her. He apologises and kisses her very romantically, it's very sweet. She forgives him and lets him get back to translating the book.

Dalton realises that the book is in code and a decoder ring is needed to translate the book. Spike turns to Dru and she does a tarot reading which reveals the hiding place of the key. Spike is so happy that he whirls Dru around in a giddy dance.

That night Buffy is on patrol in the cemetery, she sees movement in one of the mauloseums so she investigates. She finds Dalton and another vampire stealing something. She fights the one vampire and dusts him but Dalton manages to escape.

When she gets home she finds Angel waiting for her, keeping Mr. Gordo (her stuffed pig) happy. She surprises him when she climbs in through the window. He tells her that she is in grave danger, (as usual). Buffy tells him about career week and how it is depressing her and also reveals to him that she wanted to be Dorothy Hamill when she was little. Angel offers to take Buffy ice skating.

The next day Buffy tells Giles about the theiving vampires and it worries Giles. He drags Buffy off for a 'field trip'. At the factory Spike is showing Drusilla a gold cross on a red velvet pillow. He decides that for Drusilla to live he will have to get rid of Buffy. He doesn't want anything going wrong, so he calls for the Order of Taraka - bounty hunters of the most deadly kind. They'll keep coming until Buffy is dead. "Just enough kill" says Spike.

Giles and Buffy go to the cemetery and to the mausoleum which the vmapires were grave robbing. it turns out that it is the final resting place of a man called duLac, he was excommunicated from the church and banished to Sunnydale. Giles pieces together that Spike is using the book and the decoder key (the cross) to perform a ritual that will revive Drusilla. Giles then returns to the library to do some research on how to stop them.

The assassins arrive, one of them is a door to door salesman, one is a skanky looking guy who came on a bus and a girl who was hiding in the cargo hold of a plane.

Buffy blags her way out of research and goes ice skating with Angel. As skates, one of the assassins (the skanky dude) shows up and tries to kill Buffy. Angel manages to get the assassin off Buffy and they come to blows. Buffy skates back into the fray and slashes the assassin's throat with her ice skate. Angel examines the body and sees the ring he is wearing. he has a freakout and tells Buffy to get far far away from Sunnydale. Buffy notices that Angel has cut his head open, she touches the cut and he shies away. he doesn't want Buffy touching him while he's got his game face on. Buffy says that she never even noticed. They kiss, (but wouldn't Angel's pointy teeth get in the way? Obviously not.)

The girl from the plane is hiding at the ice rink and sees Buffy and Angel kissing.

Back at the library, Giles, Willow and Xander can't find Buffy. Giles realises that Buffy and Angel are in danger and sends Xander to go and find her. he tells him to go with Cordy because she had a car.

Angel goes for information on the assassin's. He goes to Willy's bar, it is a vampire hangout and the bartender, Willy is his snout (informant). he asks Willy who sent for the assassins but Willy won't answer. Angel threatens to torture him and that he is a little out of practice to get Willy to talk.

Buffy goes to Angel flat, because it is probably the safest place for her in town. She falls asleep on his bed.

Back at Willy's bar, the girl from the plane and the ice rink comes in and pulls Angel off Willy, they fight and the girl throws Angel into a storage cage, locking him in. Opposite the cage is a line of windows. The girl warns him that it will be dawn soon and that he'll burn unless he tells her where Buffy is. Angel won't tell her so she's goes to find her herself.

The girl tracks down Buffy at Angel's flat and Buffy wakes up just before the girl kills her. They fight but they are evenly matched and Buffy has to resort to girlie fighting (nails and hair pulling) to get the upper hand. When the fighting pauses Buffy asks the girl who she is. "I am Kendra, the Vampire Slayer" she replies.

Our View
So this I'm the only one thing is an attention seeking thing (sorry, we couldn't resist borrowing). The whole Buffy/Angel is hotting up, (especially the scene at the ice rink, even though it felt a little bit like SMG was showing off her ice skating skills a little. We're jealous, we can't go in a straight line without falling over) The little Xander/Cordy scene was great as well.

Our Score - 8

The Professional View
What a great episode this is, full of super dialogue and action sequences, and a sense of impending horror. The Angel/Buffy scenes at the ice rink are a tiny masterpiece in themselves, whilst the episode ends with the biggest 'ohmigod!'revelation since we found out Angel was a vampire.

Their score - 9
