Buffy's Diaries - Season 2 - Some Assembly Required

Season Two

Some Assembly Required

Buffy and Angel are doing that patrolling thang, dusting vampires and arguing (Buffy accuses Angel of being jealous of Xander (he admits he is at the end)) when they come across a freshy dug-up grave with it's occupant missing. A little research reveals that the body belonged to a student from another another school, a cheerleader who was killed in a car crash with two friends who were also cheerleaders.

Buffy and Xander walk into the library, interrupting Giles who is vainly trying to ask a chair out (as practice)(to ask Jenny). Buffy and Xander tease him, "She's a technopagan right? Ask her to bless your laptop." This help is no use though and messes it up so badly that Jenny asks him out instead, to an American Football game (Which lets Giles make some sarcastic comments about the American National game. which are funny))

But back to the main plot . . .

The scooby gang (well, Giles and Xander anyway. (Buffy reckond she's a more traditional slayer who has the babies and lets the men do the hard work)) dig up one of the other girls graves and find that her body is missing as well.

Meanwhile Angel goes to the school to find Buffy and sees Cordelia in the school's car park. She's off home after cheerleading practice. Anyway, they stumble across various body parts in the rubbish ("Angel saved me form an arm" - Cordelia). The body parts belong to the three missing bodies but there are not enough parts to make all three girls, and all three heads are present and correct.

So who is digging up the bodies and trying to rebuild them? Willow beleives that there are only a handful of people at school who are clever enough to do this and one of them's her. This leads to a search of the suspects lockers after-hours at school, something Giles simply can't condone, but what no one knows won't hurt them.

This locker search narrows the suspect list down to two: Chris Epps and his friend Eric. Chris is the Science club's prize student.

It is revealed that Chris and Eric are trying to do a Frankenstein and resurrect the dead bits of girls. A disgusted Buffy tries to stop them but discovers Chris has already honed his craft by bringing his dead brother, Daryl back to life and hiding him in their cellar.

Daryl tells Buffy that Chris promised to make him a companion, using the body parts of the three dead cheerleaders. However, their heads were not right. Only one person can fulfill that requirement. Daryl's ex-girlfriend, a certain Cordelia Chase.

Chris manages to kidnap Cordelia and spirits her away to the old science block at Sunnydale High and is about to kill her for her head when Buffy and Xander come in to save the day. Buffy fights Daryl and their struggles accidently knock a bunsen burner over and sets fire to the science-lab. Xander gets to save the day also by running through the flames and saving Cordelia (it's the start of a beautiful friendship).

Now all the excitement's over Xander and Willow discuss how everyone's paired off (Buffy and Angel, Giles and Jenny), everyone apart from them. They are interrupted by Cordelia who tries to thank Xander for his bravery. Xander tells her to go away,m they are having a private conversation. He then turns back to Willow and asks what they were talking about. "Why we can't get dates," she replies wryly.

Our views

Not one of our favourites but it did have a few good scenes in it especially Giles's observations about American Football. (It's good that he gets to take the mick occassionally, as he is usually the butt of the jokes). We liked Xander's action hero scene (in the burning lab) - but to tell you the truth it was a little slow. sorry.

Our score - 4

The Professional View

An overt homage to 'Frankenstein' (so obvious that in a series as sharp as this, it's surprising that somebody doesn't mention it!" which takes longer to get to the point than it should. But this includes lots of cool bits and pieces (Xander and Cordy's escape from the burning lab is pure James Bond) that transcend the disapointingly obvious nature of the denouement.

Their Score - 6
