Character Bios - Kate Lockley

Kate Lockley

Kate is a detective for the Los Angeles Police force. Her mother died when she was a child and her father, Trevor, is a beat officer on the verge of reitrement.

She met Angel in (wait for it...) a singles bar. Her job deosn't leave that much time for socialising, so she was looking for love, Angel however was looking for a murderer.

For a time, Kate thought that Angel was the murderer, especially when she found him in the apartment of a newly murdered victim. The demon could change bodies, looking for the perfect host. Angel saved Kate's life when she was in danger of being the next victim and they became friends of sorts (although it was obviousn that she wanted to be more than just friends). Their friendship was also useful in their lines of work, when offical sources dried up Kate could always turn to Angel for help and if Angel needed the resources of the LAPD he could always go to Kate, even though he couldn't tell her the exact reasons he was doing it.

Kate and her father have never had a close relationship, so she was surprised when he asked her to say a few words at his retirement party. Unfortunately it came at the time, Wolfram and Hart were trying to extend their influence into the police force by bewitching them and turning them all into sensitative saps so they could free one of their clients.

At the retirement party Kate got all emotional and told her father that for all these years she tried to be the daughter he wanted her to be but couldn't help feeling that she failed. Trevor told her afterwards to never talk about her mother like that again.

A rash of murders on her patch stumped Kate, but not Angel who recognised them as the MO of one of his childe's, Penn. Both Kate and Angel tracked Penn down to the abandoned warehouse he was trapped in, but Kate got to him first. Until now Kate has no idea of the evil that lurked just under the surface of Los Angeles. Penn told her that he was a vampire and was about to kill her when Angel plunged down form the floor above. He and Penn got into a fight and Kate finally saw Angel for what he really was.

After she got over the shock of what Angel was she decided to find out about him, about the monster he was when he was Angelus. Angel siught her out at her apartment and she told him that she wanted nothing to do with him again. This wasn't to be though as Penn came after Kate and Angel had to save her. He and Penn got into another fight and it was Kate who in the end saved them by staking the two vampires with a large beam, Angel through the stomach and Penn through the heart.

Now they stayed apart from each other, although she started to take more of an interest in the stranger cases they received. Like the demon who attacked a subway train full of commuters. The demon was after a package, which was removed from the scene by Trevor, Kate's father. Now that Trevor was retired he was trying to earn some extra money by working for a courier company, providing them with police information. What he didn't know was that the company was demon run, and he was unwittingly helping sell drugs.

The demon (who looked human) told him to be wary of Angel, who he knew only as Kate's friend. Trevor then told Kate to stay away from him, as their relationship was already non-existant, Kate didn't think that would be a problem. When he tried to get out of the situation, the demon in charge sent around some vampires to silence him. Angel got there a little bit too late, the vampires had already been invited in. Angel tried to persuade Trevor to invite him in, but Trevor, mindful of his warning, refused and paid for his mistake with his life. As soon as the last spark of life was gone from Trevor, Angel could get in the apartment and dealt with two of the vampires, the third escaping as kate came running in to see her father's body. This was the last time they worked together, they tracked down the courier firm and killed every last demon in there.

It seemed that their relationship was now over.

Kate was put in charge of the case that involved a certain escaped Slayer from Sunnydale and was not pleased to discover that Angel was harbouring a known criminal. She even threatened to put him in an east facing cell if he didn't tell her where Faith was. It was lucky then, that faith came to confess of her own free will.

The attack of a homeless woman brought Kate and Angel together again, Kate arrived just after Angel had saved said homeless lady. She tells him, in no uncertain terms, that she will rid all of LA of his kind, implying that he will also be rid of.

When Angel's building is blown up by Voach, Kate is on the scene again, she tells Angel that he is the witness in an arson attack and orders him in for questioning. Angel tells her that he's had enough of her treatment, of her blame for her father's death and adds that he has more important things to worry about.

It doesn't look like they are going to be friendly again any time soon.
