Angel's Journal - Season 1 - In The Dark

Season One

In the Dark

A woman, called Rachel, is walking quickly down an dark alley, trying to get away from someone. Instead she walks straight into him. He is a boyfriend who uses and abuses her. He throws her again a dumpster and is about to shoot her when Angel turns up to save the day, knocking the boyfriend out and saving the girl. She tells Angel that she didn't think he would turn up but Angel tells her that he doesn't back out of his promises.

While they are talking, someone is watching them from the top of another building. It's Spike and he make a hilarious translation of Angel and Rachel's conversation, based on their movements. It ends with "To the Angelmobile, Away!" (very funny)

At the office, Cordelia is printing out their first invoice (her computer skills have also improved) for Rachel, but Doyle warns her that it might never get paid. Cordelia refuses to be put down and is extremely pleased when Oz walks into the office, she gets rather excited as they catch up (it takes thirty seconds). Doyle looks a little bit jealous of the attention Oz is getting. oz tells Cordy that his has something for Angel and they all go downstairs to Angel's place.

Angel is a little surprised to see Oz and they have a conversation made up of single syllables. Oz shows Angel his gift from Buffy. Doyle is very very happy for Angel, telling him that he knows of a few strip clubs that do good luncheon buffets. Angel doesn't feel the same way. Doyle ignores misery guts and drags Oz and Cordy to the pub to celebrate. While they are out, Angel takes the ring and hides it under a brick in the sewers by his apartment.

The next morning Doyle has a monster hangover is a praying for a migrane-vision because it'll kill him. Cordelia humours him. Angel is downstairs going through a Tai Chi sequence when he gets a phone call from rachel saying that Lenny (her boyfriend) has been released on a technicality and she's frightened. Angel tells her that he'll be straight round. He goes down to the garage but before he can get to his car he is attacked by Spike brandishing a plank of wood. They fight, both physically and verbally. Spike wants his ring back. Cordy and Doyle come down to investigate. Spike says hello to Cordy before taking off.

Angel tells Cordelia to stay at Doyle's until Spike is taken care of. Cordelia says that she won't invite him in, but Doyle points out that he'd only burn the place down instead. Cordelia decides that Doyle's place might be a good idea but is uncomfortable in it. Doyle jokingly tells her that it's only gone messy since he saw hers. He phones up some old friends to try and track Spike down.

Angel has finally got to Rachel's and tells her that she might be best off making a fresh start.

Doyle phones Angel and tells him of a contact called Manny the Pig, who denied knowing Spike before Doyle could ask him. Angel goes down to Manny's place and beats up various patrons until he finds Spike drinking a poor girl. Angel pulls the girl away and tells her to run away. He chases after Spike, but its all a trap as Angel is attacked by a man wielding a chain which he wraps around Angel's neck.

Cordy tells Doyle about all the things that Spike got up to in Sunnydale and his killing two Slayers and they begin to worry when Angel doesn't check in.

Poor Angel is chained up in a large empty warehouse where Spike plans to have him tortured until he tells him where the ring is. His torturer is Marcus (the man with the chain) a vampire with cares not for worldly things, only his record of Mozart and torturing. (Spike's kind of guy). Spike wants to see some serious pain inflicted on Angel - he has a lot to be angry with Angel about - and Marcus starts thrusting red hot pokers through Angel's stomach, shoulder and leg. (ouch)

Spike leaves him to it and goes back to Angel's to try and find the ring, as well as trashing the place out of spite. He is disturbed by Cordelia (and her crossbow) and Doyle. Spike tells Cordy that she'd be dead before she even used the bow and tells them that if they want to see Angel alive they have to bring him the ring.

Angel is still being tortured. Marcus drones on about how they need the darkness while shooting holes in the warehouse roof so the sun shines in on Angel, burning him. Angel pretends to be cracking and tells Marcus that all he wants is forgiveness. However, he is also picking up a piece of stake-shapped wood to dust Marcus and he would have done it too if Spike hadn't shown up and stopped him. Spike decides to torment Angel and tells him about 'Slutty the Vampire Slayer' and how she's jumping into bed with the first guy she meets. Marcus starts to pull out the pokers, making Angel scream.

Cordelia and Doyle have taken the whole apartment apart, trying to find the ring. The only place left to look is the sewers, and there is a lot of them in LA. Cordy complains that it is like trying to find a needle in Kansas. While her back is turned Doyle goes all Spikey-faced and uses his demon senses to find the ring. They then meet up with Spike, but tell him that before they tell him where the ring is they want to see is Angel is still alive (or as alive as a dead person can be)

Spike takes them back to the warehouse and stops them from running to Angel. Doyle throws him the ring, which lands on the floor as Oz drives his van through the side of the warehouse and then keeps Spike back by training a pair of hand crossbows at him. Doyle and Cordelia get Angel down and into the van and they roar off.

After they've gone Spike looks for the ring and finds it gone, his vampire torturer taken off with it. Spike is *very* annoyed and decides that from this moment on he's working on his own. it's so much easier that way. He smashes Marcus' record player, which makes him feel a little better.

Oz, Cordy and Doyle try to work out where to take Angel because he's so badly hurt. Oz points out that hospitals tend to be fore humans. Angel is worried about Marcus and orders Oz to turn the van around. He's just worked out where Marcus is. They head towards the pier. Marcus is enjoying walking in the sunlight and is even more pleased when he spots a group of boy scouts. Oz drives the van up the pier and into Marcus, Cordelia leaps out and tells the scouts to run away. Angel gets Oz to open the side of the van and he leaps out, rugby tackling Marcus. Angel's back is going up in flames as they smash through the railing of the pier and into the water. Everyone rushes over to look, but neither of them can be seen.

Angel and Marcus are fighting underneath the pier, where there is no direct sunlight to make Angel toasty. Marcus taunts Angel who impales him on a broken strut of the pier. Marcus can't move and Angel takes the ring off him. Marcus explodes into dust.

The other rush down to find Angel standing under the pier looking around in wonder. This the the first time he's been able to go in the sunlight for over 240 years. Oz comments on how pale Angel looks (twice). Angel goes for a walk along the beach.

That night, Angel is sitting on the top of his building watching the sun go down. Doyle joins him and Angel tells him that he can't keep the ring. The world needs someone to defend them from the darkness and he doesn't want to be blinded to them because he can walk in the daylight. They watch the sun set completely and as soon as it is gone Angel takes a brick and smashes the ring with flares green. Then they go back downstairs, Angel saying how today has been a really good day, apart from the torturing and that.
